Assignment Five - Finals!

All assignments due on or before the 15th of January!

Please choose three (3) of the following questions and answer them in a minimum of one hundred words each. Each question is worth ten (10) points and you may earn up to a maximum of thirty (30) points in total. You are free to send in as many answers as you wish, but will receive no further points for any questions answered after the initial three.

1: Write a short scene in which you explain the details of something in your world. Do your best to make it interesting, but very clearly tell the information rather than weaving it into the story. When you are done, re-write the scene and weave the information in through dialogue and description. It should look something like this.

2: Choose a rule that you know exists in writing and write a short scene in which you break it. Tell me what the rule was at the end of the scene, and answer the three questions in the lesson about whether or not the rule should have been broken in your scene.

3: Think of an example in an existing book where the author has purposefully broken a writing rule and as a result has made their story better. Answer the three questions from the lesson and tell me why you think the outcome was positive. Now choose a different existing book where a rule has been broken to the detriment of the story. Answer the same three questions and tell me why you think the outcome was negative.

4: Write a short scene in which there are no characters and no item is personified. Do what you can to make it interesting, and fit in a story arc if you can. When you are finished, tell me if you think it works as a standalone story and why. You are more than welcome to think it is perfect without characterisation, so long as you give me a reasoned argument for it.

5: Answer the following questions for two marks each. The one hundred word minimum applies as a whole rather than to each of the five questions.

  • I have covered a lot of information in five lessons. If you were to take this class again, would you prefer the same layout, or ten lessons with extra credit replaced by assignments? Please give a reason for your answer.

  • Which assignments did you enjoy the most in world building? Which ones did you enjoy the least? Why?

  • What made you want to take world building, and did you achieve the outcomes that you wanted to achieve at the end?

  • If you were to take over teaching world building, what would you change? What would you keep the same?

  • Was there anything about world building that you wanted to learn that was not covered in the lessons? What was it?

Extra Credit

For thirty (30) points:

Write a story set in the world you have created during the course of this class. It can be as long or short as you like and on any topic that you like. Points will be awarded for creativity, how well you balance showing me your world without detracting from the story, and the quality and immersion of the world you have created.
