All assignments due on or before the 15th of January!

Please choose three (3) of the following questions and answer them in a minimum of one hundred words each. Each question is worth ten (10) points and you may earn up to a maximum of thirty (30) points in total. You are free to send in as many answers as you wish, but will receive no further points for any questions answered after the initial three.

1: Create the hometown of your main character. Tell me about its culture: what religion/s are prominent, what schools exist, what are the current fashions/fashion faux pas, and what do people do for entertainment? Add any additional detail you wish, but make sure you let me know one popular phrase or slang word not used in our world!

2: Create the base mechanics of a magical system. Tell me what makes the system interesting, what abilities do people have, what limitations are there, and what it costs the user to utelise their ability.

3: Choose a magical system from one of your favourite novels. Tell me about it and what makes it interesting and realistic to you. Conversely, what flaws or contradictions does it have? What could be done to improve it?

4: An exercise in voice: pick something easy to describe, such as a beach scene or view of a park, and then describe it from the point of view of five different characters. It can be long or short, but each description should show the differences in their personalities. For example, one character could simply see girls in bikinis, whereas a strongly religious character may see objectified young women in need of a moral lesson. Be creative!

5: Choose a character that you know well, whether from a novel, real life, or of your own invention. Describe their appearance and personality to me in as few words as possible while doing your best to instil in me the same sense of who they are as you have yourself. When you're satisfied with your work, have a look back and briefly describe what core aspects you felt you needed to include to portray this person accurately.

Extra Credit

Choose one (1) of the following for a maximum of thirty points.

Write: Using two characters you know well (it could be some you've created or some you've read about, just make sure you source any non-original material), create a scene in which they overcome a problem together. Describe this scene using only dialogue and no narrative clarifications such as 'he said' or 'he shouted'. You can give a brief description of setting at the start if you wish, and should include who the first speaker is, but from the moment it begins you should use only a dash to indicate a change in speaker. See here for an example to clarify.

Illustrate: Draw a picture of a character or town you have created. Try to give a sense of personality (even if you chose town) and include a quirk that makes your character or town interesting or unique.

Convince: A town that you have created is currently seriously lacking in the tourism department. Create an advertisement of any kind to convince me why I should visit your town and what sources of entertainment I would find there.
